A symbol of strength and integrity

A symbol of strength and integrity. Those are the words of Roderick Bradley, Creative Director at British Sports Brand Playerlayer, when asked to describe one of the nominees for Nottingham's Sportsman of the Year.

The man in question? James Wells, a West Bridgford born GB Karate international, who was told he would never fight again when he was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2010. 5 years later, and Wells has defeated the disease not once, but twice. He has also returned to competitive action at the highest level. Defying the odds, Wells represented England on the world stage this year, bringing home a bronze medal, as well as adding to his trophy cabinet with a silver at the UK Open.

His inspirational story has culminated in him being nominated for the prestigious Sportsman of the Year award, at the Nottingham Sports Awards 2015, which is being held at the East Midlands Conference Centre, this evening (Thursday 29th October).

Having spent 5 months battling one of the most aggressive forms of Leukaemia, the disease relapsed 8 months later. However, the Nottingham-born athlete’s outlook was one of determination not defeatism. To Wells, this was just another fight, and not one he was prepared to lose.

“That mental approach to the disease, that’s how I looked at it. I just looked at it that if it takes five or ten rounds of treatment, it was like a tournament. It might take five or ten rounds to win a tournament, so I looked at each round of treatment like that.”

This time though, Wells needed a stem-cell transplant to survive. He is here today because of his younger sister, Rebecca.

"My sister saved my life," he said. "If it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be here. She's amazing."

PlayerLayer are proud to have formed a working relationship with James and will continue to support him in all his future endeavours both on and off the mat, no more so than at the Nottingham Sports Awards 2015.

In the words of Roderick Bradley, “since first meeting James it is clear to see that he is an inspiration. James has joined the PlayerLayer family and is now an important member of the team. As a former athlete I understand the commitment and sacrifice it takes to reach the top of your game. Doing this through the adversity that James has faced must have been an unimaginable challenge. A challenge which James has conquered. Having James at PlayerLayer is a pleasure. He is a symbol of strength and integrity.”

Up against Paralympic swimmer, Ollie Hynd, and England cricket star Stuart Broad, Wells might not be the frontrunner for this Thursday’s awards ceremony. Yet, this is not an obstacle that has stopped him in the past, and is unlikely to prove so in the future. He belongs.

When a roundabout in the bicycle loving Holland became too busy for cars and bikes to share space, the design agency ipv Delft came up with a beautiful solution to separate the two transportation forms completely: an elevated bicycle roundabout. Located on the border of Endhoven and Veldhoven, the bike path is fittingly called the. The structure holds the distinction of being the first suspended bicycle roundabout in the world.

The entire futuristically styled ring is supported by the needle shaped central pylon, lending the delicately designed structure an appearance of levitation. This is only enhanced by a shape that resembles a flying saucer and night time illumination around, above and below the ring.

Cars go underneath the Hovenring while cyclists bike around the 72-metre diameter bridge.

Traditionally the camping industry has been geared towards practicality and durability. The passionate camper enjoys being in touch with nature and the natural beauty of the great outdoors. The conventional blue and green tent colours were manufactured to blend with nature and the countryside.

However in recent years, as festivals, glamping and staycations became more popular, it became apparent that a certain pizazz was missing from the camping industry. An idea was sparked to create a range of totally unexpected designer tents, Field Candy was born.

We have teamed up with field candy and a collaboration will be released soon.
