PlayerLayer and Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating, the governing body of GB’s performance squad, have agreed a partnership making PlayerLayer the new Kit Partner for official training, travel and podium wear.

Since the Sochi Olympics in 2014, the GB team have gone from strength to strength, dominating at the 2016 European Championships, where Elise Christie and Charlotte Gilmartin claimed overall gold and silver medals respectively, and the GB men’s relay team completed the medal tally, earning bronze.

Having started the 2016-17 season by breaking the 500m world record in Salt Lake City, Christie has recently experienced even more success, this time in Shanghai, securing two 500m Gold medals and the number one spot in the World Cup rankings. Whilst earlier this year, the ladies relay team, led by Team Captain, Charlotte Gilmartin, demonstrated the team’s clear strength in depth, as they made history by setting a British record in the 3000m event.

The team have arrived in PyeongChang ahead of the ISU World Cup in the Republic of Korea, full of confidence, for what will effectively be a dress rehearsal for the 2018 Olympics, set to be held at the same venue.

“As the British Sports Brand, we are naturally thrilled to be entering a partnership with the GB team, who are also based in our hometown – Nottingham. Short Track Speed Skating is such a unique, fast-paced exciting sport to watch, and will serve as a different arena to showcase the PlayerLayer brand. We look forward to supporting GB Short Track in some of the world’s most iconic landscapes, and making sure they have an iconic look and identity to match.

There is a rich history of skating in Nottingham and we hope to continue that legacy with the GB team, as they step up their preparations for Pyeongchang 2018. We will be keeping a close eye on events in Korea in the coming days, as the team compete in the same venue as they will in the 2018 Olympics.”

Roderick Bradley – Marketing Director, PlayerLayer

“In sport when you train day in, day out and compete at the highest levels, there are a multitude of aspects that are important. One thing we looked for from our clothing was comfort and style, specific technical requirements, and team look and identity. We are delighted to have formed a partnership with PlayerLayer who are supplying our training, travel and podium wear clothing.

There are various unique aspects to the PlayerLayer kit which helps us as a winter sport training in the UK and competing around the world, through their different fabrics, water resistant qualities, not to mention the thermal aspects and comfortable fit. Short Track Speed Skaters do not conform to the general population's body shape; their slight upper body frames and muscular legs mean fit and comfort is always going to be a challenge. But, PlayerLayer accepted that challenge and have worked with us to find a functional solution. As a sports clothing company, PlayerLayer is aligned to our team values around Excellence, Team Work and Adventure and we are really looking forward to how this partnership grows and evolves.”

Stewart Laing – Performance Director, Great Britain Short Track Speed Skating

2016 European Silver overall medalist and GB Team Captain, Charlotte Gilmartin (pictured below right), went on to mention:

“The PlayerLayer kit has definitely brought an identity to the team, we are looking so much more professional when we are travelling and training, we haven’t had that before for World Cups. We’re developing as a team and in the lead up to the European and World Championships every little difference counts. We like the logo and look overall.”

Whilst, World record holder and World Cup ranked number one, 500m, Elise Christie (pictured below left) added:

“It’s the first time we’ve had women’s fit kit, the girls are pleased with that. It’s comfortable for training off the ice and the layers are important for training on the ice. We have to have kit that is hard wearing and durable and the winter jacket is a hit with the team.”
